iPhone 17 Air (Slim), Apple wants to hit the record: thickness around 6 mm | Rumor

There is conflicting information about the iPhone that will replace the current Plus variant in 2025, that is, the iPhone 17 Slim or iPhone 17 Air, as it has been recently called. A rumor from a few days ago claimed that a record thickness was out of reach due to the difficulty in flattening the battery beyond a certain limit and that therefore the record – at least for the iPhone range – was seriously at risk.

Contrasting indications, indeed: the analyst Jeff Pu, in a note published a few hours ago by the investment bank Haitong of Hong Kong, reinforces the signals on a very low thickness, even around 6 millimeters. The current record for thickness of the iPhone range is held by the iPhone 6: the 2014 model measures just 6.9 mm, the 6s of the following year was unable to do better or even maintain the level of its predecessor due to the introduction of Force Touch, the system that through pressure sensors was able to detect the force with which the user pressed on the screen.

We agree with recent rumors that the iPhone 17 Slim model will have an ultra-thin design with a thickness of 6 mm, according to a report seen by our colleagues at macrumors.com.

HOW HAS THE THICKNESS CHANGED OVER THE YEARS

A thickness of about 6 mm would therefore make the iPhone 17 Air or iPhone 17 Slim the thinnest model ever, it would be about a quarter of the thickness less than an iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max (8.25 mm). It is interesting to see how the thickness of the iPhone has evolved since the 6:

  • iPhone 17 Air or Slim (rumor): 6 mm
  • iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max: 8.25 mm
  • iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max: 8.25 mm
  • iPhone 15 and 15 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max: 7.85 mm
  • iPhone 14 and 14 Plus: 7.8mm
  • iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max: 7.65 mm
  • iPhone 13 and 13 mini: 7.65mm
  • iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max: 7.4 mm
  • iPhone 12 and 12 mini: 7.4mm
  • iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max: 8.1 mm
  • iPhone 11: 8.3mm
  • iPhone XS and XS Max: 7.7mm
  • iPhone XR: 8.3mm
  • iPhone X: 7.7mm
  • iPhone 8 Plus : 7.5mm
  • iPhone 8: 7.3mm
  • iPhone 7 Plus : 7.3mm
  • iPhone 7: 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6s Plus : 7.3mm
  • iPhone 6s : 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6 Plus : 7.1mm
  • iPhone 6: 6.9mm (the thinnest iPhone ever so far).

So far, rumors have outlined an iPhone 17 Air with a display of around 6.6 inches with Dynamic Island for the front-facing camera and Face ID, an Apple A19 chip with a 5G modem not from Qualcomm but from Apple, a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel front-facing one, an aluminum frame and, of course, at least 8 GB of RAM, which is the bare minimum to support Apple Intelligence’s AI functions.
