How to update Chrome
“Chrome stands out as an excellent browser, not just for its speed, customization options, and seamless synchronization across various platforms and devices, but also for its highly efficient update system that automatically downloads and installs the latest software version.”
Is there any need to explain how to update Chrome? In theory, no, but in practice, that is, in the daily use of the browser, you may encounter problems that prevent the automatic update system from working correctly. In these cases, you must immediately take action and restore the automatic update function, because you know: that using old versions of software means exposing yourself unnecessarily to security risks, and this is unacceptable.
I would say then not to waste any more precious time, banish the chatter, and immediately start to concentrate on the instructions contained in this tutorial, all dedicated, precisely, to how to update Chrome. I am trying to understand well how the update system included in the Google Home web browser works and how to “fix” it in case of problems. Happy reading!
“Steps to Upgrade Chrome to the Latest Version”
If you want to know how to update Chrome to the latest version available to guarantee maximum security while browsing the Web, you need to carefully read the instructions that I will provide you in the next few chapters.
How to Update Chrome on PC
The standard procedure to update Chrome manually on Windows only takes a few moments of your time: first, click on the ⋮ icon located at the top right and press on the Settings item in the on-screen pane. In the new screen that appears, select the About Chrome tab on the sidebar.
If there are no new versions of the browser available, you will see the message Google Chrome is up to date. Otherwise, the files needed for the update will be downloaded automatically (if everything is working properly, of course!). Then press the appropriate button that is shown to restart Chrome and apply the new update. The browser saves the open tabs and windows and reopens them automatically after resuming.
You should know that there is also a visual method to understand when to update Chrome on your computer, by looking at the color of the browser menu icon (i.e. the ⋮ icon in the top right): if it is green it means that there is an update waiting to be installed for at least two days, if it is orange the update has been available for four days while if it is red the update has been ready for over seven days.
So far so good, right? Too bad that in some cases — as already mentioned — Chrome can “play up” and not download the updates as usual. To bypass the problem, you need to roll up your sleeves and put some tricks into practice.
In the following lines, you will find some solutions to update Chrome on Windows 10, but please note that the procedures described are also valid for both Windows 11 and previous versions of this Microsoft operating system.
If you want to know how to update Chrome on Windows XP or Vista, you should know that these versions have not been supported for some time, so I recommend upgrading your PC’s operating system.
- Open Assignment Administrator (right-click on the taskbar and select it from the menu) and shut down these cycles: GoogleUpdate.exe, GoogleUpdateOnDemand.exe, GoogleCrashHandler.exe, and some other Google or Chrome-related ones. Restart Chrome and check for refreshes as referenced previously.
- Go to Control Board > Framework and Security > Windows Firewall, click “Permit an application or element through Windows Firewall” on the left, then press “Permit another application” and pick C:\Program Records (x86)\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe.
- Uninstall Google Chrome, following the instructions I provided in this tutorial of mine, and reinstall the program by downloading it from its official website. More details in this guide of mine.
Another precaution that can be useful to adopt in the event that, despite putting into practice the indications above, the problems persist is to perform antivirus and antimalware scans to search for any software that is harmful to the system that could in some way hinder Chrome updates.
To do this, you can first use the antivirus program in use on your computer. If you don’t already have one, you can immediately download and install one of the many solutions that I have provided in my tutorial on how to download antivirus software.
As for anti-malware scanning, I suggest you rely on the excellent Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which is free and allows you to remove trojans, worms, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and other types of “inside” from your computer.
Please note: if you intend to update Chrome Portable, you should know that this operation is not possible. In case you are not aware a portable version is not officially supported, but you must rely on third-party services to use this version of Chrome. Therefore, if you want to obtain a more updated version than the one you have, you must download a new updated client from the same portal where you previously downloaded Chrome Portable.
How to Update Chrome on Mac
Even on Mac, to check for Chrome updates, you need to click on the ⋮ icon at the top right of the browser window, select the Settings item from the box that appears and, in the new section, press the About Chrome side tab.
The process to follow is identical to the one I described in the chapter on Windows. The only variation compared to what I previously explained is the Set automatic updates for all users button, which enables automatic updates of the browser for all macOS users.
And now let’s move on to the remedies that can be put into practice when the application just doesn’t want to know anything about updating. The first consists of reinstalling the Google Software Update service that manages the updates of Chrome and other Google programs.
- Open Terminal (found in the Other folder of Launchpad ) and fill in the following commands.
- ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py –uninstall
- Sudo/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/Resources/install.py –uninstall
- Download Google Software Update from this page.
- Package, launch the file, and follow the on-screen instructions.googlesoftwareupdate.dmg GoogleSoftwareUpdate.pkg.
- Try updating Chrome normally.
In the unfortunate event that the above procedure does not help to fix the situation, unfortunately, you will have to reinstall the browser.
If you continue to have problems updating Chrome, even on your Mac, you can try running a scan with a good antimalware program to detect any malware that may be preventing you from starting and/or completing the Chrome update process (although they are rarer on macOS than on Windows).
